Does anyone know what's going on with chestnuts? Are they in short supply for some reason? Out of favor? Something else?

It used to be that you could get chestnuts here in the New England around the beginning of October. But they're not available even now, and at a major supermarket, I was told they *might* be available around Thanksgiving!--by which time they'll be old and dried up.

I was in the NYC area this past weekend 10/28 and I got some beautiful, very fresh (i.e. not shrunken) chestnuts at that wonderful market, Fairway.

Not only are they not edible, they're toxic. And they're likely to be the only thing you'll randomly happen upon - thanks to careless/ignorant importations a century ago, chestnut blight is more or less ubiquitous in the US. Chestnuts used to be very common, but now few sweet chestnut trees are resistant enough to reach maturity, much less bear fruit.

You may want to try Oriental markets, particularly Korean markets to see if you may actually be able to find some locally.

Also here is a site that offers chestnuts but this year's supply has been sold. They have a link where you can sign up to be advised of next year's crop!
