We were in the mood for carne asada tacos today and after going to the farmer's market we first headed for El Tonayense, a taco truck parked on Harrison between 19th and 20th. The carne asada taco is $1.50 for two small corn tortillas, a handful of beef, onions, cilantro and salsa (hot or mild, I got hot). It also comes with a couple of slices of pickled carrot (yum!) and one large jalapeno chile. This was a nice little appetizer taco, but to get full you will need to eat three of them. The meat was pretty good, but on the bland side, and the right amount for the size of the taco. Then we decided to try Papalote on 24th at Valencia, which we had never been to, but will add to regular circle of tacquerias from now on. This was a nice place. Small restaurant, really friendly staff. The tacos come two to an order. So it was $3.75 for two carne asada tacos with tomato and lettuce in addition to the meat. I didn't see any onion on mine so I will ask for it next time. The meat was the best part of this taco; tender, very flavorful, nice size chunks and good quality meat. And, it's important to note that Papalote's chipotle salsa is the best salsa I have had in Mission district tacquerias. I'd go back just for the salsa, and will definitely buy some to have at home.

After tearing up tacos all over the Mission and the rest of the city; El Norteno taco truck still serves the best in my opinion, and the trucks are clean and the meat is fresh, which I cannot say the same for El Chorrorense

I recently discovered Papalote too and find myself craving their unique orange salsa frequently. Meal was healthy and flavorful. I had the grilled prawns tacos and my s.o. had a soy-chorizo (don't knock it 'till you try it) and potato burrito. Both delightfully yummy and the staff was very kind. I'll have to make the trip over the bridge again soon (easily BART accessible at 24th & Mission) to pick up a large vat of their special salsa and to try some other items on the menu (they have regular and vegan mole). Everyone around us was eating huge breakfast plates (huevos rancheros, chilaquiles) which looked good.

their website linked below, but the menu is not up-to-date

I adore that orange-y salsa, too. Don't know what is in it, but it is hugely addictive. When James and I used to live on 24th street, we would get it by the mason jar and when they were out of jars (or we forgot to bring ours), the friendly owner would just put it in a large soda cup. YUM!
