restaurant DAN on upper west side

japanese izakaya-type place: some sushi, some tempura, some donburi

am planning to try it myself, but was wondering what other hounds had to say about it.

looks like it would be great for lunch. good set menu? suggestions?

The best Japanese Izakaya Place that I know of on the Upper West Side is Sun Chan.. Place is really solid.. Get the grilled Saury, Grilled Rice Balls, great Chicken Wings, Wasabi Octopus, they have unfiltered sake selections. Its in the 90's but if you are up there, its worth it..

I concur with pcwd & Dave. It's not bad, but I only go if I want a reasonably priced dinner near Lincoln Center.

I'm with pcwd. Dan is a standard-issue, old-school Japanese restaurant. It's the definition of average. But Dan is a place with little pretension -- it is unambitious, comfortable, and amiable.

I like Dan. I particularly like their Yakisoba and the bento box lunches are a fine deal. I do agree the sushi may be the weakest part of the menu but their other itmes, like the noodles, are good. It's been there for so many years and I've never been disappointed.

It is fairly standard Japanese/sushi. Nothing special, not bad. Good for after a movie. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there. Haven't been in a while but I think I recall that some of the noodle dishes are interesting. I think the sushi was the weakest part of the menu.
