at 1403 Maple Ave (Just east of the Veteran's Memorial Building off Hiway 12 at Brookwood). Great prices, great food. They were out of yuca when I went & you'll have to go on weekends to catch the Sopa de Menudo or Sopa de Marisco, but my selections were excellent. The antojitos include four types of pupusas served with cortido, empanadas de plantano (with beans or custard), tamales, pasteles and Nuegados (?). They serve breakfast and large plates (camarones, mojarra, biste, carne asada, salpicon).

No hours included on menu, but you can call them at 544-3141.

Another great ethnic endeavor in Santa Rosa. Hope you'll support them so we can all enjoy eating there.

Hi Stephanie, good sleuthing! Do you like this one better than the vendor/restaurant that sold pupusas at the Wednesday night market this summer?

Melanie- Better, if only because it's close to farm market and other frequent stops, whereas the other place is down on Santa Rosa past Costco & other busy places. :)

Also it has booths & tables and feels more like a family restaurant than a taqueria. I was there at lunch and there were all types of people eating, including some repeat customers who were warmly greeted. Reminded me of the family run places in the Mission. Hope you enjoy it! - Steph

Kewl, sounds like its serving some Mexican as well as pupusas? The empanadas de platanos with custard are calling my name...

Wonder if it might be the lady who made the fantastic pupuasas at the Cinco de Mayo celebration -

The food inspection site lists the name as Pupusas Salvadorenas.

I think it's just Salvadorean food - breakfasts include add-ons like frijoles y crema and different breakfast options include fried plantain, corn tamalitos or chicken tamales. Do bring your own metal fork - they served each dish with its own plastic fork. And, they don't have booths, but tables along walls & in center of room - good for getting a crowd of people together.

The empanadas de platanos with custard are calling my name...
Yes, they were fantastic cool and creamy on the inside, crispy on the outside. Mmm.

enjoy,

Yeah I second that... Plaintain Empanadas and the large plates are just as traditional in El Salvador as they are in Mexico... so we can say that the restaurant is just Salvadoran independent of the similarities.

Also... Nuegados are Corn & Rice Dough Fritters served with a sweet sauce.

Finally made it out to the Pupuseria today for lunch... and I am glad to see its doing well. Rush hour began about 12:15 and by 12:30 just about every seat in the house was taken.

Overall rating... its good enough to go on my lunch rotation.. but not particularly special.

I had two pupusas... one with squash, the other mixed.

> The dough was soft & creamy... maybe a mixed flour (they don't offer the option of Corn or Rice flour)

> Cheese was good but not as pungent as the better Salvadoran places in L.A.

> Pickled Cabbage was crisp, sharp tasting... maybe could use more oregano.. but it is certainly in the upper half of Curtidos i've had.

> Fillings were decent... I particularly liked the Squash one

I also had a couple of Plantain Empanadas.. one bean, one sweet. The bean was okay but blandish... the beans lacked the garlic & spices & the plantain just wasn't ripe or sweet enough. The sweet one was a bit better.. with the filling tasting somwhat like tapioca... but overall it screamed out for some kind of hot chocolate or pozol accompaniment.

I have eaten papusas from the "Hot Tamales" Vendor [I think the one further down Santa Rosa ave.] twice now at the farmers market and the curtido is stellar.

I am interested in Salvadoran Tamales - has anyone tried them at either locale yet?
