Il Sole on Sunset - thoughts?
Anyone been recently?
Never will go back after going with a large party and having the waiter insist on white truffles with every dish and never mentioning the supplement. It's overpriced enough without a waiter preying on a large party knowing that some at the table have no idea what white truffles cost. The food is fine, not great, the room is pretty good.
I hate to say it, but i decided to go last night and loved it. Hearty tomato bread soup, heirloom tomtoes with amazingly creamy burrata. Lamb chops that were cooked to perfection. Only 2 criticisms - chocolate ganache dessert and the price of the dinner (but it was worth it). Oh, the hostess was a b*tch but the waitress was awesome. She pointed us in all the right directions... save the chocolate ganache. Great wines by the glass too. A little sceney, but go!
I've gotta share a great experience I had there about 2 years ago...I was in LA on business and stopped in during the afternoon to get a coffee and practice my bad Italian on the cute waitresses. The owner heard me trying to speak Italian and came out and we talked about Italy etc... later that night I decided to eat there with a pal and we stopped in on a very busy evening...without reservations...just as the hostess was giving me the spiel about "how could I expext to get in without a reservation - with a bit of attitude - the owner recognized me from the afternoon and told the hostess to seat us at a great table on the patio...next to Jennifer Aniston! We had a great time and the best part is we were dressed in jeans and t-shirts! it was funny watching the staff try to figure out who we were to get such great treatment.
It just goes to show that while it's nice to be important, it's more important to be nice. And yes, the food was great.
I think the food there leaves a lot to be desired, and the noise level is spectacularly loud. The celebs do love the place, but I don't get why (but then again, they love the Ivy so what does that tell you?).
