Best Torta

Does anyone have a favorita torta place in the DC area? I'm looking for somewhere that has a real variety of torta options, like you'll find at Super Tortas in LA. I've always thought that the best torta places are like the best banh mi places, in that they make their own bread (so that it is fresh and custom-made for their sandwiches).

Where do folks around here go for tortas?

I'm not overly versed, but the ones at Pepito's are crazy good to me - one of the few places I'll easily take a torta over a taco.

Do you mean the Pepito's in Adams Morgan? And is it a bakery? (If so, that's a good thing, torta-wise, I think.)

Their second installment is there, yes. And yes, it benefits certainly from the "bakery" aspect of the operation. The first one is in Gaithersburg, btw.

I generally have good luck with the tortas at Costa Alegre in Greenbelt, although they are inconsistent: some days they are excellent and some days they are merely good. However, this is a full restaurant and tortas are not their specialty. I've been all over the PG County Mex places (i.e. Bladensburg), and I haven't seen any places that specialize in tortas; tacos seem to be a more reliable option at most of them. In fact, I had the most appalling torta ever at the Beltway Plaza outpost of Taqueria Tres Reyes -- a wretched, sickly piece of gristle accompanied by a few meagre vegetables wrapped in a soggy piece of stale bread. I dunno if the Bladensburg location is as bad but I stick with the tacos there.
