This cart smelled so great yesterday and had a hungry looking line that was too long for me to wait on. It must not be the same Sammy's as the uptown one of Vendy award finalist fame--does anyone know how this downtown Sammy's is?

the cart on b'way/4th is not bad -- nothing spectacular, but better than average street cart chow. the Vendy winning Sammy, however, isn't uptown, but in Queens, at 73rd and Broadway in Jackson Heights.

According to Metro New York Sammy's Halal is in three locations in addition to the original one in Queens, so it most likely is an offshoot. Haven't tried the downtown one, but loved it when I tasted it at the Vendy's.

There is a Halal truck in Queens, on North Conduit a few lights east of Lefferts Blvd that seems to be associated with Sammy's (some of the signage makes reference to a Jackson Heights location). It's a great $5 lunch. Last week I was at a meeting in Manhattan, 48th and 3rd, and got a lunch damn near identical to the one in Queens. I'm assuming that all of these places are related to one another.

I tried it fri afternoon. the cart on W 4th had lovely, fragrant rice pilaf and really savory, moist lamb (i had a taste of the chicken, which was sinus-clearing). The guy said Sammy the Vendy winner does the cooking for 3 carts, and had been at their cart on Thurs (i think) parading his trophy around. so it seems like 2 queens locations and this one all have the real deal.

Went by this past Saturday afternoon and it wasn't there. Are they off on the weekends or have they moved since Tower Records closed?

Any other suggestions in the area? Tried looking for the cart reported on E 11th & 1st Ave, but it wasn't there Sunday night. Ended up getting chicken & rice from a cart in front of Trader Joe's on 14th and it was horrible.

FYI, there is a Sammy's cart on 2nd Ave. & 2nd Street in the East Village. Tried it one Sunday night a few weeks ago. The gyro meat was a bit dry. It might have been sitting on the grill a bit long, but overall, my chicken/gyro combo over rice was still delicious for $5.

Might have to swing by tonight if my dinner plans fall through.

The best Halal Cart is in Astoria, on Steinway and 34th. The cart makes chicken, beef, lamb, and falafel sandwiches and platters. Sammy's cart is more Indian style, the food contains cilantro and is served with basmati rice. Sammy's is good but I prefer the cart located on Steinway in Astoria.
