re: montreal traveller
to throw in a sushi option, while i love japango and have no issues with dining there on my own... they don't have a bar, i'm not sure how keen you are about sitting with other singles.
otherwise... i'd hit up omi on church just north of carlton. the decor is lacking but the food is delish and john really really cares about his sushi. if he has any of his brown sugar cured salmon, do not miss it!
beerbistro also has the seats at the side of the kitchen, the "chef's table" if you will, which would make for an interesting meal.

Oyster Boy and Lee -- if it's Lee, make sure you are on the far side of the bar facing the majority of the restaurant. Don't be scared by the "sharing" marketing ploy - I had three dishes all to myself, enjoyed it very much, chatted up another single diner at the bar while he waited for his friend to arrive, and even made eye contact with Susur himself as he wandered in and out. Definitely an entertaining solo outing!

Definitely Starfish. You get the entertainment of the shucking and great food & wine. Easy enough to strike up a conversation with the staff or patrons. It's a pretty friendly place.

re: Googs
The Jarvis Adelaide/Front area is goot for bar dining. I stopped in to Trevors Kitchen which just opened and had the Mini Kobe Burger trio (amazing!) @ Church & Wellington (Toronto.com review: http://www.toronto.com/restaurants/article/000-381-535) . Also there is Laide Lounge @ Adlelaide & Jarvis Love their Crab Enchaladas & Gooey ribs.. (http:\\www.laide.ca)
I have heard good things about Kultura but have not been yet and do not know about the eating situation in the lounge.
