Fresh Pork Belly?

Need some help finding fresh Pork Belly.

Need it for Sunday so would have to pick it up Saturday. I've put in call to my local Bristol Farms today (10/25/06). They're trying but not sure if they can get it by then.

Any suggestions as to who carries it frensh on a regular basis?

Koreatown?
Japantown?
Chinatown?

Thanks.

  1. I saw fresh porkbelly at a Ranch 99 last weekend. They have several L.A. locations

    1. 99 Ranch Market always has it. I usually go to the Rowland Heights location or the San Gabriel location (on Del Mar & Valley, NOT the one on San Gabriel & Garvey).

      1. 99 ranch always has it; so do Japanese markets like Mitsuwa and Marukai.

        1. Try the grocery store in the bottom floor of the Koreatown Galleria, SE corner of Western and Olympic. They ALWAYS have it there, very fresh and reasonably priced. They sell it frozen, fresh, sliced and unsliced.

It's a terrific market in general as well and you can lunch upstairs after. Enjoy.

          What are you cooking?

          1. Any Asian supermarket in or around Alhambra and Monterey Park has it all the time. No need to 'special order' it.

            1. Geeez !

What took so long for a response. Like a whole 7 minutes or so.

Much thanks. This truly is an amazing board.

              1. man, when it comes to pork belly, we don't do the mess-around.

                1. In Chinatown any Chinese grocery store with a meat counter will have it fresh.

                  1. 99 Ranch is great for practically all fresh meat products. One of the few major grocery store chains with actual in-house butchers who take apart the meat to your specifications. Most groceries these days just phone it in with pre-packaged meat that's prepped at the packing plant.

                    1. Just a note-- get a good look at the piece your are buying vis a vis your purpose, especially if you are braising it as a meal.. Pork belly varies a lot in fat to meat ratio and you want to make sure you get the proportion you need. The delicous bits at restaurants are almost always the most meaty pieces of belly.

                      1. Galleria Market on Olympic @ Western did the trick. And then some.

                        Nice referal.
