Keens Steak House

We have a reservation for Saturday night. We chose to push the envelope beyond our regular steak haunts (Lugers, Del Frisco, Strip House). Keens seems to have an interesting history, and I've heard a lot about the scotch...but not much yet about the steaks. Any recommendations?

I had the NY Strip there and was more than surprised at how good it was. Keens is now my #2 steakhouse in Manhattan (after Frankie & Johnny's, which I won't defend - it just has a special place in my heart and is a fun joint.)

I usually get the porterhouse and it is excellent. Not a separate strip and filet.

I once ordered the porter-house and was disapointed. They combined a t-bone and a seperate filet. Strange. Maybe it was one time that they were out of porterhouse.

That being said, I love Keen's, prefering the smaller bar room, by the fire.

The oysters rockerfeller are always a good bet to start. The "Mutton-chop"*is unctuous and delicious. Good cream of spinach, though for me, the Palm Too has the best.

*according to the NYTimes (two star!) review, its not technically mutton, but the oldest lamb you can buy. The reason now escapes me. Maybe someone can chime in.
