I had a nice weekend in Montreal, and was looking forward to going to Le Nil Bleu for ethiopian. It's gotten so popular, that when we got there it was packed. They said they didn't have any room for us as I didn't have a reservation. I was a little bummed, but I didn't make reservations because sometimes things just don't work out when you're on vacation and I didn't want to pull a no-show if I couldn't make it.
We were about to turn and leave, when the server gave me a card for Abiata a few blocks south on St. Denis. He said to check there, and that Abiata was a sister restaurant, and they served the exact same food. Yay! So we walked down and asked if they had anything open, and they made us a table! The staff were so kind.
So we wait a little and order, and got the sampler platter and one of my friends ordered the kifte (I think?) served leb leb. We also put in an order for some house cocktails.
Waited a little longer. It was busy, so I can believe the wait. Never got the drinks, but the food was excellent, and way too much for 3 people. The sampler platter was delicious, but the kifte(?) was way too spiced with cardamom - it just killed my appetite the rest of the meal. The beef on the sampler platter was amazing, however, and if I go again, I think I'd order just that.
We asked our server about the drinks, and he brought them over. They would have been nicer to have with the meal, as you could really feel them help with your digestion. When we got the bill, we were informed that the drinks were on the house. How nice!
I really enjoyed my night at Abiata, the staff were so nice and welcoming, and the food was great. (Plus who doesn't like eating with your hand?).
