Mayday! Smoked ham hocks vs. fresh pork hocks

I am making 15 bean soup tonight and got fresh pork hocks vs. my usual smoked ham hocks. And I am not going back to the Acme.......
Should I use the fresh or no?
Thank you!

  1. The fresh hocks will give your soup body and flavor, but no hickory-smoke flavor. I would use them -- and roast them first -- but realize the flavor will not be the same.

Would it make sense to add some bacon for the smokey taste?

    2. Can i mix fresh and smoked ham hock, and get the smoked favor in beans. Yes or no

      1. I sometimes add a little sauce from chiles en adobo, which gives a little heat and a smoky flavor to a bean dish. I've grown to like the flavor it imparts a great deal. Sometimes I add a chile, and sometimes I add just a little of the sauce.
