I've been getting takeout from this place and it's great. I haven't tried that many things on the menu, but there are items that intrigue me. I mostly choose items that will carry out well and not be soggy and gross by the time I get home.
So far, my favorites have been the roti and the jambalaya. I usually order the roti as a plate - since the bread will become soggy. It's curried chicken with black eyed peas and cabbage. Also with the plate are braised veggies and rice and kidney beans. Admittedly, I love the rice but could do without the beans. But, they are kidney beans so I can pick most of them out.
The conch chowder is also very good. It's not creamed based (yeah!) but tomato based. It has a full rich flavor to the broth with little pieces of onions, tomatoes, celery and conch. There are probably more things in it, but it's damn tasty.
But the best is the special hot sauce that the chef makes. It has heat. Not too much heat that it will burn your taste buds off but enough to really enhance all the flavors of the dish. I especially like mixing it with the roti, rice or jambalaya. But be forewarned - I've been told that most people find it a little too much, so try it with caution.
I've always wanted to try the fried chicken and the jerk chicken. But I have to wait for a sit down meal.
I saw a sign today for Monday night tastings. I've never been, but it looks intriguing. I don't think it is on the web site.
