Rhapsody is occasionally recommended on here but I don’t recall seeing a full review so I thought I’d write one up for our experience last night for any potential symphony goers.
We had a reservation at 5 pm, we were warmly welcomed at the hostess desk. We were informed that if we check our coats we could keep them there until after the concert (we were attending a symphony). Everyone was friendly and polite.
After being seated we were offered rolls which were excellent. Over the course of the meal we had mini-baguettes, pumpernickel (which had either raisins or currants–a bit different but worked nicely), and a roll that while I forget what it was called was essentially a “golden roll”–yellow, egg based dinner roll. All were very good.
Service was top notch, unintrusive, polite, friendly...all around excellent.
My wife had the Field Green Salad and I had the Portabello & Truffled Goats Cheese Salad. The Field Green was a typical salad but had a Jell-o sort mold which was according to menu, Jellied Sickle Pears. To me, I felt it had a nutty flavor–very interesting. The Raspberry Balsamic on the salad was great, more raspberry than Balsamic, light and crisp.
Mine was a bit different....it was three medallions with a layer of mushroom, beet, and goat cheese...with three walnuts, and vinaigrette beautifully drizzled around. Pungent, sweet, and earthy...an excellent blend of flavors. I don’t like walnuts, but I tried one and it was what it was.
We are vegetarian, so we both had the Chef’s Vegetable Tasting which I was told was a bit of every vegetable side on the menu plus a centerpiece of filo dough, pearl onions, oyster mushrooms, and asparagus. The plate had around eight things on it....a squash dish (spaghetti squash?), asparagus, artichokes–unbelievably good, gingered carrots, baby broccoli, a sauce dish that had a coffee/chocolate taste–rich and wonderful...next to that was a roasted potato so I assumed they went together--if they were supposed to or not, they worked well together. There were also, what I think were poached pears in some type of white wine-–not sweet enough to suggest Sauternes though. There was more, but I don’t recall everything...I knew I should’ve jotted down notes. If the service slipped anywhere it was that everything wasn’t explained, but I’m not sure where that line is.
We finished with coffee and though the restaurant did pick up right around 6 pm, we were in no way rushed out the door.
After the concert, we decided to head back for dessert. My wife had Peach & Rum Ice Cream Bars which I didn’t think were that great—not bad, but pretty much just ice cream with some thin cake layers. Of course, it seemed blah to me because I had the Chocolate Symphony. One of the most beautiful desserts I’ve seen and it was as good as it looked. It was four little desserts—a berry mix which was good. A chocolate covered banana ice cream “lollipop” which was fantastic...the ice cream didn’t taste like straight banana, there must’ve been some vanilla mixed in, came out dipped in chocolate on a stick. A small (shot glass) sized lava cake was on the plate as well–excellent, rich, and though it was excellent the portion was ideal–any more would’ve been overkill. Finally, a chocolate/peanut butter layer cake was the fourth part–mainly peanut butter in taste, also excellent.
As we were leaving the symphony and entering Rhapsody the couple behind us had the following conversation: Woman: “Do you want to go here and get something to eat?” Man: “No way, this place looks way too stuffy.” To those who may think that–rest assured–it’s not stuffy. Both servers we had were incredibly polite and friendly, our dessert waiter asked how the concert was and mentioned waiting on the conductor the night before and getting an autograph--stuffy? Hardly.
The restaurant is located within the Symphony Center. If you exit through the bar and turn right you’ll be in the “Terrace” area of the hall, and just need to walk down a hallway to the main entrance.
The restaurant, however, is not cheap. Our dinner with one glass of wine each, two salads, two entrees, a coffee, and a cappuccino was $100. Two desserts and one glass of Sauternes was just over $30. For my budget, not a place I’d go back to all the time, but for a special occasion or night out, it’s worth a look.
