I have not seen Gourmet's show on PBS yet. What's it like? Is it pretentious? Informative? Preachy? Chowish?

I've only watched 2 episodes so far: Jose Andres and the show on Italy.

I like the show but don't LOVE it, yet.

The Jose Andres episode followed him around his "creative" kitchen and then went off on relavent tangents to feature Harold McGee and then a specialty olive oil shop in Barcelona.

The Italy episode focused on how travelers can dine with natives instead of opting for restaurants.

It is not pretentious at all. How pretentious can a show be when Ruth Reichl is touting PB, Mayo and Olive sandwiches, and caramel corn. The PB sandwich sounds very intriguing... I enjoy that she does not take herself and food too seriously, but has fun with it.

To me, the show is about learning about how others engage with and enjoy food. Not preachy.

New episodes have not aired in a few months, but I enjoyed American Eats (History Channel), and am hoping for another season.

Occasionally featuring food stories is Modern Marvels (History Channel).

I did a writeup on my blog about these shows:

I don't have Tivo, instead I have comcast DVR which is basically the same idea, so here we go:

no reservations
joan cusack's local flavors (taking that off today - hate that show)
how to cook everything with mark bittman
lidia's show (forget the name)
jacques pepin
rick bayless - mexico
gourmet's new show on pbs
top chef
some holiday cooking show based in singapore on azn tv - it rarely comes on the tv
hungry detective

btw, I have edited this post like 4 times, because I keep remembering shows that I continually watch.

Sick in bed with the flu--- I caught 2 episodes of Masterchef this morning. A stark contrast to Top Chef... no infighting among the contestants, most of whom display average cooking abilities at best. Not a whole lot of suspense here; you don't much care who wins.
