Ethio Coffee: new Ethiopian in North Oakland

Robert Lauriston Oct 21, 2006 02:36 AM

Noticed this driving by today--I think the name's Ethio Coffee. Half a dozen Ethiopians were sitting at cafe tables outside drinking coffee. Deli-type layout inside. I could see pictures of food so I'm pretty sure they sell more than coffee.

West side of Telegraph, just south of Alcatraz, a block south of Cafe Colucci.

The pictures looked like Ethiopian food, not coffee-shop stuff.

Then they did change. They had nothing remotely Ethiopian on the menu or pictures.

You know, I stopped by there a few months ago and wasn't too impressed. HOWEVER, I'm not sure if there has been another owner since then. There really wasn't much that I wanted to buy, just standard coffee shop sandwiches and pastries. I bought something forgettable. I have noticed that business picked up lately, so maybe it has changed.

There was a second, recent change of ownership or management about a month or two ago.

And just so its clear where the location is, it is attached to the Alcatel Liquor shop, beloved by untold (well, maybe a few) generations of UC students. You can enter the deli through the liquor store, and vice versa.
