Anniversary dinner without breaking the bank

I'm coming up on my anniversary with my boyfriend this December and am drawing blanks as to where to go. He just graduated law school, so most of our meals for the past few years have been on the cheap side. He's also not the most adventurous eater (loves steak and chicken) and I don't eat red meat, though I love fish. Location doesn't matter, but nothing too expensive, please. Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Little Owl...Very small, great food, and covers both of your food preferences. Do a search for prior posts on it. Jsut make reservations well in advance. It's very small and books up fast.

If you're willing to hop across to brooklyn (cobble hill), I'd suggest Saul on Smith St. Michelin star, excellent food, and they have a 3 course prix fixe for $30 which I think is any night but Saturday. Limited choices (two or three options per course) but its a lovely place. Chestnut on Smith St. also does a mid week prix fixe for a similar price but you can choose from the whole menu.

In manhattan, how about Mermaid Inn for great fish, warm environment, but very reasonable. I'm pretty sure you can get a steak there too but not positive on that.

Crispo in lower Chelsea is excellent and pretty reasonable..Italian.

I would recommend Giorgios of Gramercy. It has a nice, cozy atmosphere, the service is top notch, the food is great and the prices are very reasonable. I am a bit of a picky eater but found many options. You can also consider Le Zie, which has a great combination of homemeade simple pastas and seafood. Both fit your needs. I would probably select Giorgios for an anniversary.
