Review - Luscious Thai (1st & 61st)

This is a relatively new neighborhood Thai place that has opened on First avenue , near the mini restaurant row by the Queesboro bridge. There are a number of other PanAsian places around there so competition is tough, but the nabe seems to like this style of food notwithstanding one sushi place closing recently on 59th. The restaurant is stylish (black tables and plates, red napkins, carpet tiles, etc) and has a cool hipster ambience. It's more than just a Gang Kiew Wan shack decor wise.

They seem to have an established take-out business; we walked in without reservations and I doubt you need them. Currently they do not have a liquor license (and I bet it will be a while to get one) so its free BYOB for now, which is a nice plus for the CH'er with a cellar.

We started with the summer rolls, which are not fried and have a filling of waterchestnuts, mango and maybe dried tofu. It's ok with a sweet (perhaps hoisin based?) dipping sauce. Not sure if it'd get again though even though its only $5.

Then we had the jumbo shrimp in a clay pot, which were steamed over glass noodles. You get 5 or 7 big shrimp in that. The clay pot seems to be just for decorative purposes as an investigation of the interior and the lid didn't reveal any sign of cooking happening in it, unlike many asian casseroles. The dish is $17 which seems fair enough.

Then we had beef curry ($12) with some eggplants added ($1 extra) along with green beans. It was excellent, with the curry sauce being a thick spoon sticking style; this we would definitely get again. By the way, the curry is more brown (as opposed to being red/green/yellow) which is atypical for this dish. Both this and the above dish came with small bowls of jasmine rice. You can get more for $1 each, and you might need them. (What's up with charging for rice anyways?)

We polished off our wine and then tucked into some frozen deep fried bananas wrapped in spring roll wrappers. These were unusual but tasty when dunked in the berry sauce they came with. Pretty good value for $6 and worth getting for a small group. I wonder if this are really made on site, or are something that a resaurant supply house sells frozen ready made.

The service is warm and we didn't have any issues. I would go back here and if you are within a few blocks or so, it's worth the walk. If free BYOB is useful to you, then this is worth an even longer walk. I suggest you get tables in the back, or the courtyard, so you can avoid the front's kitchen as well as delivery business.
