Lemongrass review (Hamilton)

  • 5

Just moved to Hamilton and trying out the recommended places. We eat and cook a lot of Asian food so I think we have pretty high standards. I basically expect chef-made curries and lots of fresh veggies when it comes to Thai. We tried Lemongrass on Garth as many have assured me it's the best Thai in town. I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this one b/c the bottom line is : ICK!

First, I should've left when the menu didn't even have green curry, red curry, masaman curry etc. There was a dish called "Thai Coconut Curry" which we ordered. In short, it was a few veggies (mostly chucks of something woody ? undercooked potato or rather large bamboo shoots?) , a few small tough shrimp slathered in pasty, yellow curry congealing on a plate that was highly reminiscent of Glico curry (poplular in Japan as a way to make fast curries at home & avail in little cubes at most Asian stores). If there was coconut in there, I couldn't taste it. We also had Bami Goreng (yes, I know this is Indonesian) & some fresh rolls with shrimp and mango & they weren't too bad (again, shrimp tough), but not interesting.

Basically, this place has a nicer atmosphere than most Hamilton joints but clearly makes no effort to make real Thai food and tried to pass off pan-Asian quick-prep food as Thai.

Back to B&T which although primarily Vietnamese, is at least, a lot tastier. I'll make my Glico at home in 5 min next time I need a fix of that!!

  1. I completely agree with you regarding Lemongrass.

However My Thai on John St. N is okay for Thai, but in the area, I would recommend Bahn Thai at Appleby and Fairview in Burlington.

    1. Thanks! I will definately try Banh Thai next.

      1. Bahn Thai is great. Was just there for lunch today! Very reasonable lunch specials and amazingly fast service.

Looking forward to B&T opening in Burlington soon.. I love their green curry tofu bowl.

        1. I'm surprised at your review of Lemon Grass - it's one of my favourite casual restaurants in Hamilton (a city that needs more admittedly). For lunch it's popular among my work mates too. Granted, the service is not professional - and yes Bahn Thai has good quailty food (and rude service) - but Lemon Grass does offer a better atmosphere and overall total package.

          1. Siam Dish on Lakeshore in Burlington is EXCELLENT!
It is just near Brant Street next to the Second Cup.

The food is gorgeous, colourful and very very authentic.

The staff is very receptive and the owners are from Thailand.

If you want TRUE THAI......go there
