Kobe beef in San Diego

I attended Seau's Legends party earlier this year. I was very impressed by the Kobe burger I had, a mini-mini burger with all the flavor of a regular sized burger (I had about 5 of them!!). The problem is that I can't remember the restaurant that was sampling them. If you were at the Legends party, do you remember that restaurant OR can anyone recommend a spot in San Diego that serves a good Kobe steak?

  1. The best kobe items I've had in San Diego is the kobe burger at Just Fabulous on Adams Avenue in Kensington. It's one of the best burgers in town.

    1. Island Prime also does a nice "kobe" beef burger. The meat is excellent quality, but I'm one who thinks it should rightfully be called "kobe-style." Most of the "kobe beef" in US restaurants comes from Morgan Ranch's Wagyu herd in Nebraska. By US standards it's expensive, but it's not the legendary Japanese stuff from pampered cattle who are so blase that they volunteer to be made into steaks. ;-)
. . . jim strain in san diego.

I remember a discussion on egullet that it is illegal to import "kobe beef" to the US and that all "kobe beef" in the US is "wagyu beef".

      2. Fresh in La Jolla serve Kobe Sliders. Not sure of the source, but Snake River Farms it the largest producer of US Kobe, you can find it Harvest Ranch Market in El Cajon. Not sure if anyone in SD is serving it. The Kobe sliders at Fresh are great, esp. at happy hour (1/2 off if I remember). Kobe beef is from the Tajima-ushi breed of Wagyu Cattel, it is produced in Hyogo prefecture in Japan of which Kobe is the capital. So it kind of like wine named for the region (Burgandy vs. Pinot).

        Cheers.

        1. Thanks everyone!!

          1. Sushi Ota in PB has "Kobe" beef sashimi. Good stuff - just had it at lunch today.
