It looked like an apple turnover. The very friendly Columbian woman behind the counter offered to heat it up, and man was it goooood! Inside was a layer of very flavorful guava jam. the pastry itself was oily but delicious!!

the joint is called country donuts, on richmond terrace a bit past the ferry.

It sounds like you had a pastel or pastelito de guayaba. The puff pastry is filled with guayaba paste and sometimes cheese. I've made these using the Pepperidge Farm puff pastry. For the cheese part, I've used Philly cream cheese. They come out quite yummy.

The Colombian bakeries in Jackson Heights, Queens call these "chicharrones de guayaba" because they resemble the shape of cooked pork rinds...almost horseshoe in shape.
