Suggestions for Shipping Apples From Northern CA to Chicago

I got some great Arkansas Blacks that I would like to share with a friend in Chicago. These apples have a thick skin and keep well. I'm thinking that bubble wrap might create too much moisture, so am leaning toward padding with crumpled-up newspaper. Overnighting seems excessive, so will probably go with 2-Day Air unless there is a reason not to.

Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance . . .

Consider that this time of year, you have freezing weather in some part of the country. Your fruit may suffer as it crosses the Rockies, and Chicago has already had snow.

I would try egg cartons. The shape should hold and protect the apples, and the material will absorb moisture. If they're fresh off the tree, I'd imagine 2-day will be fine. Harry and David does it all the time.
