Review - La Cantina Toscana (1st & 61st)

We had a late Saturday night supper at La Cantina Toscana, which exceeded our expectations. It's a busy but not overly bustling, noisy place, popular with regulars and locals who appreciate good cooking and game dishes.

The space is narrow and long, with exposed brick on one side, and yellow stucco on the other. It gets poor marks for ambience, but I don't think anything here is really amiss for a good neighborhood place. It's helpful to make reservations, so consider doing so if you are traveling out of neighborhood.

LCT is known for their game menu and we sampled a few of those dishes, along with their regular fare. We had the

Wild Boar Sausages over Cannelini - Quite flavorful, and tasty. The beans are just the right blend between firm and soft, and soak up the oil/juice from the sausages just right. Good solid appetizer for sharing.

Asparagus Flan - It sounds odd, and its really more of a souffle, but its light airy and hot. Not something I'd want to eat a lot of, but a nice thing for a table to share. You can really taste the asparagus here.

Venison in Poricini Sauce - I am not a big fan of venison, finding it too livery and gamey, but this was not so bad. The sauce was good as was the spinach it was with. If you like venison you would like this more than I, but its still a good dish.

Veal Scallopini with Zuchini - A little on the small side but a lighter take on a classic Italian. Not as rustic as the other stuff.

Dessert was a standard molten chocolate cake/souffle. It was good, but perhaps a tad dry. Pass on their tea service, its a little weak . Still this was a solid/good neighborhood place that's worth a trip if you like game. They have a big wine list, but its very pricy. We brought a nice older bottle, paying a $20 corkage fee, and they were fine with that. Their stemware is excellent as well.
