Tehachapi Happy Apples
Report from last Saturday in Tehachapi: The day started out rainy and cold, but by the time we got to Tehachapi there was sun and even a big rainbow. We knew in advance that this was not a good apple year, and the slim variety of apples was a drag. However we did get some great apples and overall it was a beautiful drive and we came back with some good chow.
RB Family Orchard. Got a big bag of Grannysmiths, a half gallon cider. Also tried the applecrisp, good homemade flavor, firm apple slices, juicy, not overbaked with a crunchy , brownsugary, crumble top. The proprietors super friendly, gave us the lowdown on the apple situation, and tips where to go.This was their last weekend for the season.
Pulfords. A bigger variety of apples, and they let you do a mix and match bag, which is great! we bought some Empires and Melrose. And I threw in a couple Red Delicious, I don't usually buy these but was glad I did. I tried one today, and unlike the mealy awful grocery store version that gives this apple a bad name , these are actually sweet crisp and have a mild but "delicious" flowery apple flavor. Pulfords will be open into November, and they have a good website
Then we visited Dries Lavander Farm, and did some rasberry picking, not too many left, but fun to walk down the rows and discover the remaining juicy ripe berries hiding. Bought some local goat cheese here as well.
Moesnner Orchards. The Moesnners have been in Tehachapi for 30 years and they have a little farm shed with vegies, baked goods and true homemade preserved foods. Sourkraut, pickles, jams, fruit butters etc..... We bought some homemade rye bread, a vegie spread called Letcho made from Hungarian peppers, tomato, carrot and spices, and some wonderful Red Cabbage apple pickle. Oh yeah this stuff is the real deal, homemade from their homegrown produce. They had the last of their heirloom tomatoes, and more apples, but we were running out of cash!
Apple Shed. The only low point , chowwise, was the lunch stop at the Apple Shed. Not a lot of choices in Tehachapi....the sandwiches were ok, if you are really hungry which we were. The apple pie was awful, the apple part of the pie was gloppy and tasted almost as bad as canned pie filling , the crust tasted like bisquick, not flaky at all.....really made the apple crisp at RB Orchard SHINE in comparison.....
As soon as we got home , we tried the goat cheese and letcho on the fresh rye bread...wonderful...should have just had a Moesnner picnick instaed of the Apple Shed.....
