I'm driving from Durham to DC, and back, and am wondering whether there is any place to stop. The trip up will be a Thursday evening, the trip back a Sunday afternoon. Is there anywhere worth stopping or going out of my way for, or should I just make some sandwiches in advance?

Thanks

It's a little slim through most of that route.

You do run right through Richmond, which has some nice places, but none that I know of that are right off the road and easy to get to.

There is one passable joint right along I-85 in South Hill VA called Kahill's. Decent selection of entrees and sandwiches in a kind of country club type atmosphere. Not exactly a destination, but a welcome respite in the land of fast food.

Carl's Frozen Custard in Fredericksburg is really quite good. Just a roadside stand, but they have great custard.

I second Carl's. I don't care how cold it is. Best frozen custard ever. I stop everytime I drive by. Try the milkshakes.

The Hill City Chop House is a good casual sit down place. Their steaks are top notch but there is lighter dining as well, and a kids menu, and it's very reasonably priced. A friend who frequently drives NY to Myrtle Beach recommended it as a good stop and now that's also my regular stop when I pass thru. It's on US 1, just about a mile north of I-295 on the northbound side, in a mall, a little hard to see from the road but it's behind Blinds To Go.

I agree. They also have good enough crab cakes, believe it or not, to satisfy folks raised on the Eastern Shore!

Passing through over Thanksgiving we stopped at "Buz & Ned's Real Barbecue" and had some good chopped pork sandwiches. They had some nice looking ribs going on as well.

They're off the I-95 Boulevard Exit in Richmond. Very near the Richmond Braves stadium. buzandneds.com
