Kosher meat?

  • 7

Where's the best place to buy kosher meat? I'm pretty sure there's no kosher butcher here. I've seen kosher chicken at Trader Joe's but that's it. Any ideas?

The closer to Oakland the better.

This looks like a great resource for people who keep kosher, but heads up -- it's got to be a very old list, since the Cafe Olam at Berkeley Hillel (listed under restaurants) closed about six or seven years ago.

Edited to add: After looking at it further, this list is so out of date as to be really misleading. Several places are missing, others have moved, still others are out of business. I posted a link for an up-to-date list of kosher food sources in the Bay Area below.

    2. I can't tell you the best, but I'm pretty sure it's not Tel Aviv Kosher, on Irving. The brisket I ordered came with all the fat trimmed, even though I asked for the fattiest piece possible; I was given boneless skinless chicken breasts rather than the pieces I ordered (and it was all pre-ordered so they didn't have anything else available in the store as a replacement); and the 2-quart containers of chicken broth turned out to be 1.5-quarts each.

I believe Oakland Kosher on Lakeshore Avenue is the place my relatives like.

Yes, I hear the Lakeshore shop is good. I only know their challah which a friend bought for me a couple of weeks ago. Amazing stuff - only about 2 1/2 inches high and smallish (about 7 inches around - it was round) but the best challah I've had in a very long time. I think it was from what used to be called Grand Avenue Bakery when the butcher and bakery were over on Grand near Walden Pond. I used to buy chicken livers and chicken fat there.
