What's good near FIU?

I find myself on FIU's main campus (SW 8th St., near the turnpike) at least once a week. I don't live in the area and I'm usually looking for something to eat when I'm down there. Any suggestions for quick, inexpensive food that's pretty close to campus? A good medianoche (or other Cuban sandwich) would be especially nice. I'm open to any and all suggestions though.

  1. I know pretty much zip about the area around FIU, but if traffic's not too bad one day, you might be able to make your way due west to the Pit BBQ at SW 8th near Krome Ave.

    1. Thanks. I went to The Pit on my way from FIU this afternoon. The place gets major points for decor, ponies (which, mercifully, you couldn't smell once you were inside) and being out in the sticks (sort of). The chicken and rib combo was ok. The ribs had a decent smoke ring, but were still a little tough and fatty. I tried the chicken just for the heck of it. I've never really had great chicken at a barbecue joint and that still hasn't changed. The sauces, however, were quite good, especially the mustard sauce. No sweet tea was a drawback, although the bottles of honey on the table helped. I suspect they were for the biscuits, which were the kind that explode from a tube, only deep fried. They were great, as were the baked beans. On my way there and back I passed El Palacio de los Jugos, which I plan on trying next time. Any other suggestions for that area are still welcome.
