33390 Wed Dec 29 18:49:07 -0800 2004 3 1 San Francisco Bay Area 0 148873 In the course of a Christmas phone call I was reminiscing with my brother about the peanuts in the shell that we used to get at Gleason's Specialty Foods in downtown Saint Paul, which were roasted on the premises. It would be worth flying home and braving the snow to pick some up, but Gleason's no longer exists, alas. It made me realize I've never encountered really good peanuts in the shell anywhere else. I tried the ones in the bulk bins at Berkeley Bowl once, and couldn't discern that they were any better than the ones in plastic bags from Safeway. It's located at the Bay/Fremont/Washington intersection. I think it's there every week and closes at 2pm, but I'm not sure if it's there on Saturdays.
