Bacco in North End?

Has anyone been to Bacco in the North End? Opinions?

Cheers,
Kevin

I usually just grab a glass of wine..never eaten here. This place used to be "the bar" for a lot of nearby restaurants. If there was no table at Antico Forno, etc they'd send you to Bacco to wait and call them when your table was ready.

Don't know if that still goes on.

They have a full alcohol bar, which is a nice exception in the north end. The main draw here is the bar staff, they are outstanding and made this our local place when living in the NE. The wine list of OK. Plenty of adequate selections, but nothing really remarkable.

I have eaten dinner there twice and it's nothing special. It's been a while, but the pasta dishes tended to be gluey, the carbonara was a definite no-no (more like alfredo), salads overdressed. The upstairs dining room is extraordinarily loud, too.

We *always* go there for cocktails before dinner in the norht end, though. The bartenders are good, and the appetizers are tasty if you want a snack at the bar. We've tried the calamari, bruschetta, and antipasto and enjoyed them all. We just won't go for dinner again.

I'd love to hear more about Bacco's bar, as there are precious few places with decent bartending in the North End. Is it mostly about wine? Decent beer selection? Do they do proper shaker drinks, or is a scary place to order a Negroni?

I've never had a negroni, but the cosmopolitans are really perfect. REALLY perfect. I've tried a couple of their specialty, fruity "martinis" - yes, yes, I know they are not really martinis - anyway, they were not too sweet and had good clean flavors, which is rather uncommon it seems. As Gabatta says, the wine selection is pretty standard. It's a nice space too. Give it a try!

No by-the-glass selection to speak of--2 or 3 white, 2 or 3 red, all commonplace. But I go now and then anyway b/c I find the atmosphere pleasant...
