Pressure Cooker novice

I have a Fagor pressure cooker but lost the owner's manual. Does anyone have any cooking tips for a first time user? In short, I don't know how to get it up to proper pressure, maintain it and know when the food is done. I want to make an oxtail stew and think the device can expedite the cooking process.

Thanks in advance!

  1. I think that practice makes perfect as far as pressure cooking is concerned. I usually raise the temperature, make sure I have enough liquid and then put on the lid. Then I wait until it starts to make scary sounds and I start to time the process. Timing is everything. I found this site that has helped with some cooking times:

I have always had a fear that I will be killed by an exploding pressure cooker. The thought of my mom's old one that rattled and shook still scares me.

    1. oops..i forgot...when it hits the point where it is "pressure cooking" I turn the temperature down to low/medium.
