There's been much written about Applewood on this board -- if you do a search, you'll be well rewarded. I've written a few times to say it's one of my favorite Brooklyn restaurants, so I certainly think it's worth it. They do take reservations and entrees run (I think) between 17 - 25 or so dollars.

Applewood is my favorite restaurant not only in Brooklyn, but in all of New York City. (My favorite in the world? I think my meal at French Laundry may still keep that place in the #1 slot).

In general, ditto to what JenMarie said above:

1. Search this board and you'll find a ton of posts

2. They take reservations and they're quite needed most nights

3. Entrees are as she says though you could eat 2 appetizers and still have a lovely meal.

I concur with the above comments. I think David Shea is one of the best chefs in NYC. Applewood is a gem.

Re reservations - we always make them - Fri and Sat nights being the toughest. I called today for a 8PM seating for tomorrow night and it was no problem.

First time going to Applewood. Venison charred on the outside and rare on the inside. Lots of squash everywhere. All quite good. But: Way too much salt, especially the veg. plate the girlfriend ordered. Nice atmosphere, sophisticated cooking in a New England style. I thought I was in Vermont. Fireplace etc.
Pretty good for Brooklyn.

I was visiting Brooklyn from Oakland, CA and had read an article in Travel & Leisure on Brooklyn gems. Since it was my birthday I got to choose the restaurant and picked Applewood. I don't know if I can say enough good things about this place. The service staff was knowledgeable and attentive. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy (I sat right by the fireplace). Everyone there looked happy and relaxed. I have never used this word to describe food before (not for lack of good food but for its silly factor) but it was exquisite. It is absolutely undeniable the amount of love and passion that goes into every bit of food their hands touch. The chef obviously loves what he does. I had pork and venison, my friend had fish and the other had the lentils and we split 2 desserts. All wonderful. Their relationship with their growers is apparent and is very much in tune with how many people in the Bay Area dine out.

Pricey (although I didn't pay). Worth it.

in general, i prefer their meat and game dishes to their fish dishes (esp. this time of year), but that's as much personal preference as recommendation.

I must recommend the skate: roasted perfectly and served over maple-tinged sweet potatoes served with kale. To me, this is the perfect execution of "comfort food." If you appreciate wine, try either a glass or bottle of the Beckmen Vineyards Rhone-style white blend. This is available in very limited quantities outside of the winery (in the Santa Barbara mountains) and is the closest thing produced in California to a Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc.

I wouldn't get too attached to any preparation on the Applewood menu. While they'll probably have skate on there almost every night, it will be prepared -- and paired -- differently pretty much every time you visit.

In fact, I had the rock shrimp risotto and my wife the skate. The risotto is described as being made with mascarpone (instead of romano, or other "shreddable" cheese). I thoroughly enjoyed it, along with half of the wife's skate. One more thing: beware of being seated by the blazing fireplace; I was half-baked and sweating within ten minutes of being seated there. I was cheerfully moved to another table. Fireplaces are romantic, but one must keep one's distance.

just wanted to report back- i had the scallop & short rib appetizer and the skate entree which was paired with broccoli rabe and and olive/caper preparation. i thought the scallop was a bit undercooked and i didn't care for the way the short ribs were "pulled." but the skate was excellent. nicely seared on the outside and the olives were a nice accompaniment. the broccoli rabe was also very good- it had a bit of red pepper for spice. my friends had the lobster broth and cauliflower soup as apps and the veal w/polenta and vegetable risotto for entrees. their entrees were also excellent, i liked the cauliflower soup but didn't care for the lobster broth- it was fine just nothing special. i would definitely return. oh, and i've read a few negative comments about the service but our server was very friendly and attentive.

I've had both good experiences at Applewood (the venison was divine -- one of the best dishes I've had in NYC) and bad (oysters that tasted like lemon pledge was poured on them and then had to contend with a waitress who was condescending and then far from apologetic when she came back from the kitchen to confirm that we were right). I've also found the main entrée portions to be exceedingly small on another occasion. I'm still on the fence about Applewood and a little gun-shy to return since it isn't cheap.

i havent been there since november but i usually get the cheese plate to start. they have a great 'bleu cheese cake' that they put on it that is fantastic. i think its available at that cheese shop on smith. the sweetbreads are usually a great option as well. they used to have a sauteed lobster appetizer for $12 or so that wouldve cost $30 in the city. absolutely delicious.

i always go for a meat entree...pork, lamb, or veal. david shea is an excellent chef with meats. most of the desserts are excellent...ask the server for their picks.

my biggest complaint is that the servers are usually very hacky and uncomfortable. the wife is excellent and friendly and professional but ive yet to have a server who wasnt nervous or unfamiliar with the menu.

Never a complaint about service at Applewood. In fact, when we asked to be moved from the table immediately in front of the fireplace, we were accomodated quickly and without question.
