"New" on South Beach - anyone tried?
There are several "new" (loosely speaking, some have been around for more than a year already) places on South Beach I haven't tried yet, as we tend to return to the same old haunts. Curious to hear if anyone can speak from experience on any of the following:
8 1/2
Fifty
Afterglo
o-R-o
Quattro Gastronomie
Standard Hotel / Lido Restaurant
Setai (went there for drinks this past weekend and looked at the dinner menu - jaw-droppingly expensive)
Anything else new and good you've tried?

The new opening I'm looking forward to is Johnny Vincenz's return to the Astor which I've heard is supposed to be in November. I liked the place he had there a few years, but my real favorite was the little diner place he had on Alton around 16th.
They had a rib meat hoagie with cole slaw on top that was to die for. And fantastic ribs, with a side of smoked-shrimp potato salad ...

I've been to Afterglo twice, once before they opened and were still working on the menu, and once about a month ago. The first time was incredible, but I was sitting with Chef Michael Schwartz wife so I assume we got special attention. The second time was after Chef Michael left and Chef Sandee Birdsong took over. To what extent she oversee the kitchen I'm not sure, I believe she is also the chef at Tantra still as well. The food was very disapointing that time but the service was actually decent. I would not return. I am looking forward to Chef Michael opening at his new spot this fall.

That list just reaffirms my notion that I've been avoiding trying new places for fear of disappointment. I haven't tried a single one on that list, and some have gotten really good reviews. Not only that, we still have Table 8 and Christabelle's (in the Grove) coming soon. Better start saving up.
