Not an answer to your question (sorry!) but an additional thing to consider...

There is an old piece of folk wisdom about not eating sushi on a Monday. As you will see from the thread above, the concept is hotly debated among the populace. But if you're the kind of person who likes to worry a lot, it gives you one more thing to put on your list.

How close to NC State? Waraji is about a 10-15 minute drive. Sushi Blues on Glenwood South is about a mile away. There are a couple of places on Hillsborough Street, but they're not great.

Sushi Tsune is close to NC State, just east of the corner of Gorman and Hillsborough. I've never eaten there, but they've gotten okay reviews on citysearch (for whatever that's worth). Apparently the sushi chef has 17 years experience, and prior to moving to Raleigh and opening Sushi Tsune, he was a sushi chef in Tokyo. So it's likely pretty authentic. Again, I'm only working on what I've heard/read. I'm pretty opposed to "trendy" sushi, so based on what I've read, I'd be willing to give Tsune a try.

Sushi Tsune is one of the two on Hillsborough. It's not bad, but the quality is better at Waraji and Sushi Blues. I've eaten at Sushi Tsune several times and have no regrets!

Waraji all the way. Sushi Blues is over priced & over rated & crappy service. I think gimmick sushi is a crock. If you make it that far, you are better off spending your dough next door @ Zely & Ritz. Oh yeah, Shaba Shabu on Wake Forest road,is great & the atmosphere is also hip, but not suffocating like Sushi Blues.

I absolutely agree that Sushi Blues is unbelievably over-rated. If not for their excellent Glenwood South location, this restaurant would have surely gone under years ago. Not only is it the worst sushi I've ever eaten, but the ambiance is oppressive and the service underwhelming.

Shaba Shabu is pretty solid, as is Waraji (although I suspect that the huge portions are part of what appeals to people). We ate at Mura one evening, and I have to say that we were pleasantly surprised.

It's clearly time for an excellent sushi restaurant to land in downtown Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh. And by this I mean that it's only Japanese cuisine, no Thai on the other side of the menu. The next step: truly exceptional Thai-only restaurants that aren't located in aging shopping malls.

i'm not going to argue with the big portions assessment, but personally, waraji appeals to me because it's head and shoulders above anyone else in the area with regard to the quality and freshness of their fish. it's also very skillfully prepared, something that is woefully lacking at sushi thai, shabu, akai hana (yuck) and tsunami.
i didn't see thai food on the menu at waraji last time i went--maybe i missed it.

No - you didn't miss is because it isn't there (thank God). My point was that the downtowns in each city (versus the suburban areas) were probably ready for truly excellent, dedicated sushi restaurants. The kind one finds in top tier cities. Of course, perhaps Durham and Chapel Hill already have that, but I'm not aware of it.

Rumor has it that Cary has a great sushi spot. But I can never remember the name.
