ISO Casual (aka under $15) friday night dinner near UC Berkeley

Will be staying with a friend at UC Berkeley this weekend. Arriving Friday afternoon and looking for a casual place with GOOD food (we'll eat anything!). Preferrably under $15/person, any cuisine any atmosphere! Planning to go to Ici afterwards...anyone know if this is within walking distance from the university?

      After all these years, I still love la Mediterranee on College in Elmwood. The prices are reasonable and the food is good. I'm not a big fan of Holy Land but its been a while since I last tried it.

        La Med is definitely a good option for tasty food that won't break the bank. The prices are definitely reasonable (around $9 an entree). Chicken cicilia (I'm probably murdering the spelling) and pomegranate chicken are standouts.

          The hummus and baba ganoush at La Med. are pretty sad. If the chicken is good that might help explain how they manage to survive with Holy Land a block away.

        If you're looking for cheap eats you're going to get some serious sticker shock at Ici.

          best restaurant would be TRATORRIA LA SICILIANA... prob highest yeild italian ANYWHERE in bay area. For a bit more 20 bucks each (40 total) you will have a great meal...(if you skip there excellent wine list)...a few entrees and split an appitizer and dine on the finest dipping oil (hot pepper flakes with garlic in excellent olive oil) you will ever taste SOOO ADDICTIVE. I say spend a bit more but CHOW like a queen or king...

          other cheap eats worth honorable mention:
          GORDO's (high yeild burrito dive)
          MANPUKU cheap and reasonable japanese
          HOUSE OF CURRIES (formally naan n' curry)
          La Mediterranee...

          ALL OF THESE ARE AT COLLEGE and ASHBY just south of campus and are terrific.

            La Siciliana's good but the total tab's likely to be more than $20.

            La Mediterranee's food is similar to but not as good as Holy Land's.

            Ici is at College and Ashby, about 10 blocks / 0.8 mile down college from Bancroft (south border of UC Berkeley).

            There are a bunch of restaurants in the two blocks around Ashby. In that price range, the best are Holy Land (Middle Eastern), 2965 College, and House of Curries (Pakistani), 2984 College.
