Ploes on Broadway in Astoria was one of my favorite restaurants in the city, but they recently sold it and the cooks are all new and the menu is much much more limited.
My friends who went recently had terrible service, but I haven't tried the new place yet. The prices are much higher now.
Any reports?
I'm sad the old Ploes is gone- it was amazing.

I went less than 2 weeks ago and it was the same old excellent Ploes. When did this sale occur?

This is not true- the chef and his wife are simply on vacation- at least this is what I was told when I went there last (also about 2 weeks ago)

Unfortunately it is true. I went in and spoke with the head waiter yesterday, and read the new menu. I wouldn't post something like this based on rumor.

Lurker, you must have had one of the last meals there prior to the change!

In other news, I went to Uncle George's last night instead and it was excellent.

This is very sad news indeed. Ploes was also one of my favorite restaurants. The chef/owner was always generous to a fault, and his wife who waited tables, was very kind- she told me they had had a restaurant in that location (under different names) since the 70's. I DID sense that something was amiss the last time I was there- the portly owner was not in his regular seat in the back of the restaurant. This is why I asked the waiter if they had new owners, and he told me they were simply on vacation...

They've done this before. They have owned the spot for well over 30 years and were the proprietors of Roumeli Taverna there, the first Astoria Greek place I ever went to. It was my favorite for years until they decided to "retire" the first time and rented out the place (with the name) to a new chef/owner. That lasted for several years and the name was run into the ground. Then they rented it to several other owners who each renamed it, then they took it back and went back to Roumeli's, then they "retired" a 2nd time, then came back to open Ploes. Now, here we go again... a new chef/owner using their name for awhile. Anyone wanna bet this time?
