Help! need poppyseed cake from bakery by 2pm today... near los gatos or san jose preferred
have called "icing on cake" in los gatos - can bake one by 4pm
Dick's bakery - no poppyseed
Wilson's - closed for family vacation
any other suggestions?
a denser, more bread or pound cake like cake is preferred to fluffy and sweet, but at this point beggars can't be choosers. Just want decent cake for a birthday girl!
thanks in advance,
Lunardi's is a pretty basic grocery store.. nice than safeway/nob hill anyway... they don't have anything particularly stellar that you can't find elsewhere, but its still a nicer store. for the san jose area, I much prefer consentino's even though the stores are a bit smaller... and its farther from my house. mostly I shop there for the butcher.. they'll save you bones if you ask in advance... and will custom trim or grind any cut of meat on request... and even pack your fish in ice. so if I'm not running out to race street market for such things, it is a good day to day place to shop.
I'm pretty sure that wilson's would have had a poppyseed cake... their's is pretty dense, more like a pound cake, but still round and frosted. but alas they were closed.
no luck... could have had one made for later in the day, but this was for a work event. but maybe next we'll actually order one ahead of time for a change. LOL!
we ended up with a really fudgey cake from lunardi's.. not exactly stellar.. but you know, it pleased the usual office crowd.
thansk for your help!
Haha, I kind of expected that ending. No one's gonna complain about fudgey sweet cake at the office...
Didn't know it would be so difficult to find a poppyseed cake on the spur of the moment, but I guess they're not too common. I kept on thinking about how basic supermarkets tend to have them as well as coffeehouses, but quality certainly varies.
I think I've heard of Lunardi's, but anything that is unique and stellar there that I should know about?
Lunardi's website: http://www.lunardis.com/
While I haven't been, I've heard good things about Greenlee's Bakery on The Alameda in SJ. Give them a call:
1081 The Alameda
San Jose, CA 95126
Only other bakeries that I can think of are more European-style (La Patisserie in Cupertino, Fleur de Cocoa in LG) and I doubt they would have a simple poppyseed cake. There's also Aki's Bakery in SJ, but I don't know if they would have the kind you're looking for.
BTW, I read somewhere (Mercury News?) that there are rumors that Wilson's may be closing for good. Anyone have the scoop?
