Italy near Cote d'Azur
I'm currently living on the Cote d'Azur in France, but we're planning a road trip to Italy this weekend. Any recommendations for must see markets, shops, restaurants (all prices) within an hour or so from Nice?
We spent a month above Sanremo, not too far from the border. I'm not sure what your plans are for the weekend, but if you want to go on a little wander in the hills you can go up from San Remo towards Ceriana and Baiardo there is great pizza to be found, along with wonderful olive oil and pesto made locally by crespi olive oil in Ceriana. Just before you get to Ceriana, about 20 minutes by car up from Sanremo you will pass a place that I think is call Vecchia Fattoria , a big white building with outdoor seating. We ate there a few times, they had about 65 different woodfire pizzas available. I had the best pizza with mushrooms and truffle oil and it haunts my thoughts...so good. If your tastes are more pedestrian, they did have the "American" with hot dogs and french fries sprinkled liberally over the whole thing. Anyhow, the pizzas were amazing. We didn't find any really amazing food in Baiardo, but it was a beautiful drive and place to check out. Getting into the Alps, and the views are amazing...
All the Crespi oils and pestos are produced in Ceriana, a tiny little village in the hills, sold in all the local shops and the factory kicks out wonderful steam tinted with hints of olive and basil. Enjoy!
Balzi Rossi. The ex chef of Osteria Del Circo in Las Vegas worked there and I went to visit him. Phenomenal meal.
