Oxtails and short ribs at Market Basket, Somerville
If any of you are participating in the Home Cooking Board's All About Braising cook-together project, I thought I'd alert you to the oxtails and short ribs at Market Basket in Somerville. They always have a good selection of meat, and they still have real butchers, but both these items look particularly good at the moment. Short ribs at $2.49/lb, not sure about the oxtails. One thing I did notice about these oxtails is they are the smaller (in diameter) ones that are recommended in the book. I've got the short ribs in the freezer and I'll be picking some tails up soon.
Braise on!

Thanks yumyum: That's a good price. Braised short ribs are so wonderful this time of year. It's my favorite use of my Le Cruset dutch oven.

Yes, I thought it was a good price -- the ribs are quite meaty so even though there's a lot of bone, you do quite well getting two biggies for about $4. But really, WHO cooks just 2 shortribs?

I think the Oxtail tends to be a bit more, possibly up to $4.99. Market Basket usually has that price per/lb for short ribs, but they have gotten a bit harder to find recently and they have been having beef back ribs more often. McKinnon's usually has both, but I think their price on the short ribs is a bit more. And a Brazilian Butcher would also have both of them.

Checked this afternoon and the oxtails are currently $3.99. Some medium size sardines for grilling and avocados are at least back down to .99.

The last avocado I got at Market Basket was really horrible -- it never ripened up and when I finally got annoyed and cut into it anyway it was bruised inside and filled with fibers. I've never had this problem in the past with their avos, but this batch wasn't handled properly. I think this happens if the fruit gets frozen by mistake.

Market Basket also carries beef shin. It cooks up similar to oxtail, bigger cuts, obviously. A french chef friend turned me on to them. I've only cooked them like stewed oxtail (caribbean style), but oh, what a gravy!

No surprise, this market was a favorite of Julia Child for fresh goat and other "ethnic" cuts of meat.
