I've never had a good experience at Home. Event since its reinvention, the food is awful and overpriced when all is said and done. Thanksgiving: was a disgusting meal. The small portion of turkey was dry, the stuffing was some sweet, sickening cornbread concoction, the pureed yam goo was also sickeningly sweet. It was a blend of sugar and sugar, oh and I imagine some potatoes to give it that special orange glow. The desert, a brownie something was average. The salad with some more sweet stuff was ok. I've allowed myself to be suckered into going to this place for the last time. Doglit.

Home is the type of nouveau-American comfort food place where they attempt to reinvent familiar dishes along new lines. I am not personally a fan of messing with tradition just for the sake of innovation (not when it comes to food at least, in other things it is quite another matter ), but Home does not do it particularly badly.

For an example of "badly" I can direct you to Cascade on Blithedale in Mill Valley, where only the very reasonable wine list (viz. a 1998 Keenan Cab for under $40) keeps you from bolting for the door after you mistake the onion reduction on your steak for the dessert. But I digress.

My impression of Home's cooking is that they try too hard to be a little different, and not all they do is necessarily a hit. Overall, however, if you like their style of cooking it is not that bad.

Damning Home with faint praise,
Mad Russian

It's tough to find great reliable restaurants that are in the $8-$15/entree price range, have a nice comfortable atmosphere and friendly service. A few alternatives to Home:

Chow, which is just across the street
Houstons, along the Embarcadero - they have great burgers
BlueJay Cafe, GREAT southern comfort food - try the fried chicken!

Thanks for the tips. I'm a fan of Chow. I'll check out BlueJay. It's amazing how much of a challenge it can be to find just plain old comfort food like mom used to make. Q on Clement Street is a fun place to eat, good food, big portions, friendly service. It does get busy though. Happy dining. Doglit.

Coerced, so as to not be the party pooper, for the last time. I'm generally easy going. But, I have given this place the benefit of the doubt for the last time. Sorry friends. Lots of good, convenient places to go in San Francisco, who don't claim to be earth bound, but ultimately pretentious (and not good).
