Prepared Lamb (Borrego) head to be had at El Tigre (Escondido)
There were some nice little pearly whites smiling back at me at the cocina of the El Tigre Market in Escondido today.
For only $6.99, I can only hope some dark-comedic-spirited dad will bring this home for his kids Halloween dinner. Man, could you imagine the horror in the kids faces upon reaching the dinner table to find this replacing the mac and cheese.
Ok, my imagination is running a little wild now. Although I wish my mom or dad had done this when I was really little, especially if I had friends over. haha.
Getting back to the subject, it actually looked really good, and I was tempted to buy it. Maybe next time. Would have made nice tacos. It looked as if it was steamed, which would have made it deliciously tender.
Similarly the Value+ Market in Oceanside, proudly advertises in spanish on big wall signs that they have beef, and lamb head for sale.
When I was in college... my buddy (who comes from a long line of butchers from the Western Jalisco Sierras)... prepared a baked beef head for some Superbowl party. We were of course dispatching tacos & huge amounts of beer as well as authentic nachos (as prepared by Nacho... the inventor of the pre-teen snack food)...
Any way we had some non-Mexicans over... & one of them an African-American with very picky (as in he did not like to branch out very much) found the tacos compelling enough to ask what was in them... so we told him to go open the over door....
Ha! That was funny.... he made a big dramatic shpeel and we had to hear about it for weeks!
