Herb Shopping--best selection & value

Ora Oct 8, 2006 06:30 PM

I'm making a green seasoning (used in caribbean cooking). It consists of various chopped or pulverized fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, scallions, oregano etc.

Where is the best place for value-priced, small bunches of fresh herbs? My location preferences are 1) Manhattan, 2) Bronx, 3) lower Westchester, 4) lower Fairfield, in that order.

Thanks for any suggestions!

get thee to Burpees or other garden catalogs - most herbs are very easy to grow indoors on a sunny windowsill - other than that, the greenmarket at Union Sq. or whole foods

Why not the farmer markets such as the one in White Plains on Wednesdays? They have lots of fresh herbs, although I think they only run for another month.

Interesting, where, what time in WP? Stew Leonard's has nice herbs but the bunches are too big and a bit pricey.

Cheaper & fresher than Fairway?? I plan to check out Union Sq on Sat.

yes, definitely. fairway does fine with basics--parsley, scallions, etc., but tends to have other herbs in little containers with too much packaging that are less fresh than you'll find at the greenmarket or chelsea market. the same holds true for citarella.

Union Sq greenmarket (Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat)
Manhattan Fruit Exchange in Chelsea Market
