w-s dixie classic fair

it's that time of year again... the fairs are starting. we're going this weekend, planning to eat lots of unhealthy food-- any tips for winston-salem dixie classic fair food?

thanks for the suggestions. we enjoyed the fair, as always! the smitty's apple pie + vanilla ice cream (from the john deere place) was a highlight of the day. unfortunately i didn't get a chance to see the pinto beans and country ham sandwich recs til after i got back, but there's always next year... and the nc state fair is coming up too.

we also had a really good sandwich-type thing from mr. k's chuckwagon called bits and fixins (new potatoes, onions, steak bits with a biscuit stuck on top). Of course we ate the normal fair treats: roasted corn on the cob, blooming onion, fried oreos and roasted turkey leg.

I second the pies rec and I have always loved the pinto beans with onions & cornbread that one of the local groups sells (can't think of the name of the group)

The pinto group also had good country ham sandwiches. Also, for only one year (probably about 15 years ago now), there was a eclair trailer. It wasn't plain like the sandwich guys, this thing was decorated like a gingerbread hosue but more colorful. The eclairs were fantastic.
I have been to the DCF in years since I don't live in W-S, but I sure miss it.

My favorite food is Smitty's apple pies near the yester-year village, along with some of the excellent vanilla ice cream that can be found nearby.

The maple cotton candy inside the anex is also very good.
