TFC The Filipino Cuisine - ick.

I was in El Sobrante today and couldn't pass by without checking out The Filipino Cuisine for myself. I got the 3-item combo for $6.29 (I think), which includes your choice of streamed rice, fried rice, or pansit (sotanghon, I believe - I had rice). I chose dinuguan (pork blood stew), chicken adobo, and pork tocino (cured pork).

Dinuguan - as much as this dish varies from chef to chef, this is usually one of my favorite dises, but this one was not very well made at all. The dugo (pork blood) was a bit curdled which gave the dinuguan a grainy texutre, as opposed to the smooth chocolatey texture I strive for when I make it. It was also very greasy, not very meaty - perhaps the meat was too chopped up? - and lacking in alot of other ingredients aside from meat, like pigs ears, peppers, etc. The flavor was not too vinegary, but was a bit too salty and liver-flavored. Actually, I'd say it was gross - I couldn't even finish this dish.

Adobo - the previous post by lmnopm (link below) was dead on. I got very sorry-looking little bits of meat with lots of bone, and the sauce, while nicely peppery, was very thin and greasy.

Tocino - tocino is typically a very fatty piece of pork but this was practically strips of bacon with hunks of meat attached at the end. It had hardly and of the sweetness and flavor I enjoy about tocino, was presented as a curled up chunk of meat, overcooked, and just very disappointing all around.

Sago't gulaman - the sago (a starch similar to tapioca) was not chewy at all but grainy and not very good. Gulaman (agar) was missing altogether. The syrup was tasty, though, but it's pretty hard to mess that up.

I was very disappointed with my visit to TFC, as much as I wanted to like them. You get a good amount of food (well, rice) for your dollar, but I've had better Filipino food at Goldilocks or even out of the frozen food case at 99 Ranch. I might return to try the sinigang, pansit (the menu says they make sotanghon, palabok, mike guisado and some kind of spachetti with tomato sauce), and maybe some other dishes, but I am not very optimistic.

  1. Thanks to both of you for taking the bullet. I have to applaud anyone who goes into a new restaurant and orders pork blood stew. I usually go for the less adventurous dishes (to me) and if those are good, I'll get more adventurous.

      Trust me, I wish I had started with something less adventurous! I was definitely not feeling very good after my meal. :(

    2. My husband and I went last Tuesday (I think "official" Grand Opening was on Wednesday). I had the adobo and rice and the adobo was cold. I too had problems with the way the meet was cut up (too small -bits of bone everywhere). My husband had Jackfruit in coconut milk which he said tasted "ok" but was cold as well. I think we'll stick with Marylou's.
