South Shore dining for Bostonian

I have to meet family for a birthday dinner on the South Shore. Some are coming from the Cape and some live and work on the South Shore. Six people total.

The suggestions that have been floated so far are: Trattoria San Pietro, The Square Cafe, 53 South, and Tosca. Any thoughts on these or recommendations of any others?

I love Tosca and Bridgeman's is a nice pick, too.

Caffe Tosca is good too--differnt room and vibe from it;s "parent", but cool in its own way. Great food! Even the bread sticks are a treat (Tosca has same).

Skip Trattoria and 53 South. Nothing to write home about. Both Square Cafe and Tosca are terrific restos

since you might be considering the downtown Hingham area, another couple of miles would bring you to DeNero's on the Hull & Cohassett line. This is a fine Italian plus restaurant with many outstanding specials. Ask for the older dining room. Also down the street, on Nantasket Ave, across from the ocean, is Bridgemans restaurant. Chef Paul is a master of the wood fired grill, and his creations, both Italian and American fare, are all delightfuly, a cut above the ordinary.

I've only been to Tosca, but I really like it. More of a new Italian menu. I personally have not had a bad meal there, but it can get really crowded on the weekends.

I also like Sintra in Braintree, which I've seen mentioned on this board before. Similar price range (maybe a tad cheaper), much smaller space, and more of a Mediterranean twist to their menu. The space is certainly not as pretty as Tosca's, if that matters. I also noticed on their website that they do have an unusually early close time - 10pm.

A friend and I might spend the late afternoon in Hingham next Sat. if it's nice and eat at Tosca (finally using last year's bday gift). What's the bar area like? Would we have a problem grabbing seats around 6:00? I'd rather play it by ear than make a reservation, so hopefully the bar is a good possibility.

I don't drink, but it seems to attract a large crowd, so I gather that it's nice. :) I'll add the host/hostess has always been very accomodating when we've gone without reservations. We've even been seated on the bar side, with the full menu available, if you don't mind being in a little more crowded area. If that's something you'd consider, I think 6pm would would be fine.
