do you guys have recommendations for good, cheap indian food in austin? i've been to the clay pit, shalimar, sarovar, and while they all have their merits, i want places like the ones i grew up with in houston--small, strip mally, cheap, and authentic. mostly, i really want a good dosa. i know the community in austin is nowhere near as big as houston's, but there have to be other places out there.

Swad on North Lamar is probably my favorite Indian food in town. It's pretty much everything you asked for...
It's all vegetarian, but it's excellent!

madras pavilion is pretty tasty for being an all vegetarian restaurant. they have a great and affordable lunch buffet and they have dosas. i'm not sure what is a "good" dosa as i've not had many, but i think there food is very good for the value.

I vote for Bombay Bistro as well. Far & away the best Indian I've had in Austin. The Chronicle this week reviewed Curry in a Hurry on Parmer which sounds promising though I haven't been yet.

I grew up eating dosa in houston strip malls too. For that kind of stuff, there's a madras pavillion that is probably your best bet. It's no Anand Bhavan, and it's not that cheap, but it's really good. For chaat and more north indian snack food (bhel puri, pakoras, pau bhaji, etc) nobody beats Swad.
