Thanksgiving in Portsmouth NH area

dixie20 Oct 2, 2006 03:19 PM

Thinking of going to Portsmouth for Thanksgiving. Will stay at the Wentworth by the sea. Looking for suggestions for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner in the area. Would also like to hear comments on the Wentworths restaurant in the main hotel for Thanksgiving.

I don't know about the Wentworth, but the Dolphin Striker in Portsmouth Center is wonderful.

Have you tried going online to their websites?

At least you would be able to check out the menus.

I've only ever eaten breakfast buffet at the Wentworth. It's what you'd expect of a **** hotel. Competent omlette chef. Good selection of fresh fruit and berries.

I have no idea who is open for Thanksgiving. If I were calling around, I think I'd try the Victory first. It's in a townhourse at 96 State Street (Rt 1 North) a couple of short blocks from Prescott Park and the bridge to Maine. The upstairs is a nicely restored natural brick & fireplace setting. The food is good quality and a mildly creative twist on New England cuisine. A foodie will enjoy it. A meat & potato blue hair tourist won't be scared away. Parking (a big deal in Portsmouth) is 100 yards away on Court Street in the Strawbery Banke employee lot. If they do Thanksgiving, I'd expect interesting upscale versions of traditional side dishes.

I totally agree. We love Victory and go there often. The service is efficient and friendly, the food is good, and the atmosphere is very nice. It is not fussy, there is a comfortable bar area, and they also make good cocktails.

...and the wine list is made by somebody who actually knows wine and isn't stuck in the Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon rut.

The Dolphin Striker gets my vote. It's downtown Portsmouth.
