I am wondering if anyone has tried out the little Japanese Deli Yoshino in the Village or Pollos Maria. Are there any real stand outs in Carlsbad?
kare raisu, where is this Japanese Deli? I tried to look it up, but can only find a restaurant by the same name in SD.
I forgot the name of the street but its close to the farmers market and the train tracks. THe main strip with a lot of restaurants. Two older japanese ladys in the back making sushi and dressed salads- potato, carrot, macoroni
I guess you're referring to the place next to Caldo Pomodoro on State Street. I'll have to give it a try and report back.
Sorry that I don't think much of Pollos Maria. The best restaurant in the village might be Fish House Vera Cruz. They cook a nice piece of fresh fish, but it's not out of this world exciting. I've never tried Fresco or the Armenian Cafe, but they might be worth a shot. Lotus Thai off Carlsbad Village Drive just east of I-5 makes a couple of good dishes (Fresh Rolls and Satay), but the rest of the menu is pretty mediocre. Vigilucci's is liked by some here, but haven't tried it myself.
Had a very good meal at King's Fish House, which is on Paseo Del Norte off Cannon Rd.
My main spot is Thai Garden in Oceanside. I like their curries.
I know I'm sending you outside Carlsbad, but a slightly higher end place I really like is Beach Grass Cafe in Solana Beach.
Another Japanese place in Carlsbad is Mikko's (across from the Motel 6 on Carlsbad Village Dr). It's an OK place, but again, not a place you're going to think is really fantastic or innovative. Basically a lunch-type place.
I finally did try Yoshino's a couple of weeks back. It's deli-style and the food is good. They do seaweed salad, teriyaki chicken and several other things. You take your pick from the shelf and get it heated in the microwave.
I wouldn't make a long trip for it, but if you're in Carlsbad Village and want a quick and cheap meal, it's a good choice.
