If you are anywhere near San Sebastian it really makes sense to try one of the Michelin 3 star restaurants. The prices aren't cheap but they are a steal compared to Paris. Akelare was out if this world and the wine list was amazing.
This one is a sleeper but if you are near Leon there is a restaurant called Vivaldi that is a Michelin 1 star and just wonderful. We stayed in the paradors and found the restaurants lovely with so so food for the most part.

San Sebastian and the Basque area have some of the best food in Spain. Arzak and Martin Berasategui are the Michelin 3 star in the area and there are numbers of 2 stars, including Akelare. It is true that one can eat at any of these places for about half of what a 2 or 3 star meal would cost in Paris. On weekends, one see so many French license plates on cars parked in front of these restaurants. Aside from these well known places, some of the best eatings are in the pintxo bars in San Sebastian and Bilbao. I had some of the best seafood at the grilled restaurant, Extebarri, not even mentioned in Michelin.
