Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

good places not so expensive

We will be in San Franciso for 2days next month. We are going to Gary Danko for one night. Would like a suggestion for the other. Want good food like all kinds. Maybe something a little less expensive but. We like all kinds of food. We figure when we travel we want what the city has to offer. Where the locals fo perhaps.

  1. Where are you travelling from? That will give us some kind of idea what you can get in SF that maybe you couldn't get at home.

We are coming from Nebrasksa. I would say our specialty is steak so anything else is game.

Nebraska ... that leaves a lot of options.

Okay, so you're having one dinner at Gary Danko (excellent choice, btw) ... so that leaves another dinner but also a couple of lunches.

        I'd do:

One lunch in Chinatown (Kan's or Bow Hun -- both on Grant Street, so you get the full Chinatown experience)

If you can, head over to Berkeley and have lunch at Chez Panisse Cafe and check out the "gourmet ghetto" (see gourmet ghetto post below)

What's really hot and trendy (and delicious) right now in SF is Peruvian food. I'm not sure whether to recommend Limon, Fresca or Mochica, but I'm sure someone will have an opinion.

Or R&G Lounge in Chinatown. Also, if you come from Nebraska you should see what the Vietnamese-Americans in SF do with steak:) Try some pho, pronounced fuh (I can never say that, I just say Foh and no one is too disparaging). Can someone on this list who knows SF give them a good pho place? (I am on the Peninsula).

    2. go get the best burrito or tacos in the world...La Taqueria at 25th and Mission. Great for lunch. Slow Club is another great lunch spot on Mariposa and Hampshire at the bottom of Potrero Hill.
