I have a similiar questions as the walnut thread!

I have a "Chinese Chestnut" tree in my front yard. This time of the year it drops a small ball that is spiked, inside the ball is a
a "nut" that appears to be exactly like an "regular" chestnut.
Does anyone know if these are edible? I know there has been some work
in trying to replenish the American chestnut tree..but not sure if this isof that stock? The squirels seem to enjoy them!
TIA

Chinese chestnuts produce smaller nuts than American or European chestnuts and are quite edible if a bit tedious to shell. There have been some American-Chinese chestnut hybrids that produce larger nuts yet still resist the chestnut blight that killed most American chestnut trees.
